Last year the kids didn't go to Vacation Bible School so this year I was pretty happy when I saw the big banner advertising it in front of the post chapel. They had been taking registrations all week but because of midterms, softball, and everything else we had going on, I didn't have a chance to make it over there to get the kiddos registered. So I figured I'd do what mostly everyone does when they go to a VBS that's at a different church: sign them up on the first day.
So I drag my kids out of bed so we can be there at 9am and we are turned away. Yes, you read that right. My kids were TURNED AWAY! They said that they only had enough stuff for 100 kids. Okay, maybe it's a space or budget issue for the reason of only taking 100 kids but to me, this is the message that they are spreading: 1) God's message of love is first come, first served, and 2) Christians can't really depend on God to provide.
So I'm just going to keep a lookout for another VBS that will fit into our summer schedule and that won't turn my kids away. You know, all I keep thinking about is that they are turning away a chance for a child to come to Christ. What a sad thought.

that's a shame. Seriously. A VBS should accommodate ALL children. Make a bit of room...plan ahead. I worked a VBS in KS where we planned for 150 kids...we only had 75 registered...but we DOUBLED our size first day...we had a few less each day, but we still did well. Photocopy books...plan crafts that can be "shared" (or that you can run to the store and get more if needed).
You're right...it definitely does send the wrong signal.
My kids attend a VBS here...they run THREE cycles in the week - an a.m. cycle, an afternoon cycle and a p.m. cycle (this one runs Sunday-Thursday, the others are M-F). And they take walk ins...and they don't cut off. They had over 1500 kids come through last year. FIFTEEN HUNDRED kids heard about Jesus...can't even begin to imagine how many had never heard the Word before.
I hope you find a good VBS for them.
