Oh no! I just ate Jesus!!

Today we had a Maudy Thursday worship at our church. So after jujitsu class Jorden and I headed right over. Tonight was also the night that we had communion served to us. The two of us stood around the table while our pastor handed us the "body". Now I've always said that I would not let the kids take part in communion until they could fully understand what it meant. But as she was standing next to me, I decided that she should get to experience what a wonderful blessing it was. So as we got our bread, I explained to her what it represented: That we were taking a piece of Jesus' body because he gave it up for us. Then Jorden got this look on her face and asked, "I'm going to eat Jesus?!" "Not exactly" I said and I tried to explain it a bit better. It didn't help that now she had to drink the "blood".

At this point, Jorden is starting to get mortified at the fact that she just ate Jesus and now she has to share in his blood. So as she gets her little cupful, she's told that it's Jesus' blood. Then she said, "I don't want to drink blood! That's gross!" She's holding her cup just absolutely disgusted until I tell her that it's not really blood, it's grape juice. So on the way home I'm trying to explain it all to her but she still doesn't really understand. Maybe I should get with her Sunday School teacher to make a lesson for the kids about it.

Wow, how's that for taking things literally? It's so easy to forget how things might sound to the little ones, huh? But the title did give me a laugh!

I love your blog! So glad you started one. I try to check myspace but I don't get over there often enough. And now my list of blogger friends has gotten so big I can only check once a day (before, I'd check every time I got online). Crazy stuff. I like your pictures!

I found your blog thru Laurie's (but also through Suzanne's) and for some reason, I feel like we might know each other, since we have the same connections, lol!

anyway...I just read most of your blog, but this post really struck me.

I was raised as a catholic (I don't capitalize it due to the fact that I'm lapsed and I don't believe in the edicts of that church anymore...and other stuff, but I won't get into it right this minute). Anyway...as a catholic, we are taught that at the moment the priest says certain words up there on the altar, that piece of bread and cup of wine do indeed turn into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. And as a 2nd grader making "first communion" and taking all this in for the first time, I know several kids who were traumatized by it; they were taught and told and had it ingrained that they were eating a piece of Jesus and drinking his blood. Me? I always just saw it as representative. As I do now, in my walk with Christ. I know that when we have our communion Sunday, the little piece of unleavened bread and the small shot of grapejuice are just that, a representation of Jesus.

How scary to believe you're eating human flesh and drinking blood....sad, too.
