Today was the last day of school! The kids got out early today so we celebrated the arrival of summer vacation by going to lunch at Applebee's and stopping a Books-A-Million to play with the train. Jorden will be home for a total of about 4 weeks, two of which will be spent up in Pennsylvania with the grandparents.
There is still some question as to whether Jorden will be heading to second grade. As it stands right now, she will be. The Student Services Team says that holding her back will not help her improve and that she will always be behind. Mrs. Z and I say that's total bull-doo-doo (to phrase it nicely). I spoke with Mrs. Z about this when she brought her new baby in for a visit (he's an absolute cutie!) and she said unfortunately, there isn't much she can do on her end right now because of her maternity leave and she is not returning next year. BUT....
I spoke to the Guidance Counseler about the situation and she briefly reviewed Jorden's case file. No, Jorden was not put on the retention list but I can request it. Since Jorden does not yet have an academic IEP (right now it's only for speech) the decision would have to be up to the principal. The GC said she will bring it up to her principal but reminded me that I would have to keep on top of it during vacation so the situation doesn't get forgotten about.
In the meantime, I have a bunch of workbooks, beginner readers, and DVDs so Jorden can keep up. But after all, this is summer vacation and I want her to enjoy her time off so we'll just do a little each day. Every little bit helps!
