Most of you know that Jorden has her issues when it comes to school. And I know she tries really hard and has made a lot of progress. But today (and last year) were a little hard for me. Not because I'm seeing my baby leave but because I can't help but think that she's not where she should be. If everything went normally, she would have been starting 3rd grade. I hate that she didn't advance like everyone else her age. I hate that I had to hold her back. I hate that I think about everyone else her age and I know she'll never measure up. I know that keeping her behind was the best thing for her but it's these thoughts that make starting school a little bittersweet for me. Of course I'll never let on to her about it. I want to make school a place that she wants to be.
So other than a few kinks, today went pretty well. Jorden's alarm didn't go off so I had to literally pull her whiny, crabby butt out of bed. She gets dressed only to get her breakfast all over her pants which meant she had to change. Then she manages to get toothpaste all over her shirt (which I was able to wipe off). Then Chase decides he wasn't going to put his shoes on. But we get out the door and onto our bikes and head over.
One thing I don't like about this school is that they don't have any kind or orientation. Personally, I would like to meet the teacher and have a quick sit-down to inform him/her about what to expect from Jorden. But here you just throw your kids into a new class and that's that. I couldn't talk to her teacher but at least I could talk to Jorden. I reminded her that school means "back to business" and even though it's an exciting day, that's no excuse for not getting her work done.
So Jorden will be riding her bike home today. I'll be standing outside, waiting for her to round the corner, and ready to hear all about her first day of second grade.

I hope she had a good day! We didn't have any opportunity to "meet the teacher" either. I thought that was kind of weird. I didn't do it this year, but last year we just showed up at Chandler's classroom a couple of days before school started--you know those teachers are in there setting up their rooms and all that. We did it because it was a brand new school and all that.
I know it's hard with her being held back. But you are doing the right thing, and not letting onto it is good. And just think...in the grand scheme of things, one year isn't going to matter too much.
Happy First Day of School!
You need to schedule an appointment with the teacher and meet with her. You and Jorden will benefit from meeting with her and then you can tell her what to expect.
I'm glad we have orientation. They had Kindergarten orientation before school started...but 3rd grade orientation isn't until the 1st of September...sheesh! Couldn't they manage to schedule all of them within a week of school starting?
Jorden is where she belongs...you shouldn't beat yourself up. And she is going to live up to every potential she has been given. It may be harder, take longer and require a different route, but she WILL meet it all.
