The Gospel According to...Dr. Seuss?

Seriously, that is the name of a real book. This past Sunday, our pastor preached a message called, "Horton Hears a Who". Let me just give you the cliff notes....

Now I never actually read the book but from what I know about it, the story starts off with Horton splashing around with other elephants nearby. He hears a tiny, tiny voice asking for help. Looking around he doesn't see anything. He then realizes that the voice is coming from the world of the Whos. The Whos are so small that their entire world is on one dust speck. That's right, we're talking beyond microscopic. As Horton is talking to this dust speck, the other elephants notice but think that Horton has gone crazy. Because they can't hear the Whos, they think Horton is just chatting away with himself. And the the story goes on from there.

So what in the world does a Dr. Seuss book have to do with Christians? Well, ever notice the sounds around you? You may not notice the wind beating on the window in the middle of the night or the creaking of the house settling. But you sit up in bed the second you hear even the faintest peep on the baby monitor. We only hear what we are tuned in to.

Horton was tuned in to hear the cry for help from the Whos. That's how us as Christians need to be at all times. Sometimes we get so comfortable in where we are in our journey that we start to tune things out. We don't hear those subtle cries for help from others. Horton heard them but the other elephants didn't. We need to open our ears more. The very second we accept Jesus, our job becomes that of a disciple. We are to share the word of God to everyone. But instead we tend to force the message on some while ignoring the cries from those who are really searching.

So we need to all be like Horton. We need to keep our Christian ears open to the smallest of cries for help. You'd be surprised how many you hear.
