I Was Robbed!

You'll never believe what happened to me today. This morning, Chase and I went to the bank so I could make a deposit into my Avon checking account. After I made my deposit, the teller tells me that my account was overdrawn. Well that can't be, I thought. I ask how much and she tells me $-271.07. And that was after the $94 deposit that I just made. Well that was just impossible for me to be overdrawn, especially that much. That account is only used twice a month. I use it to pay my Avon bill every two weeks and at the post office if I have to ship to a customer. I'll also use it once in a blue moon if I have to get a loaf of bread or something. As much as I would've liked to find out the problem, Chase was in meltdown at this point because he wanted a nap so I vowed to come back in the afternoon when I picked Jorden up from school.

My first thought when I came home was to get my account back into the black. So I transferred money from our savings account over to our main checking account (hooray for online banking!) and used a little extra from the main checking to write a check to myself and deposit it into the Avon account. Then I had to figure out how I was going to pay my Avon bill. My customers want their orders on time, after all.

On my way home from school, Jason called me because he noticed the transfer. I explained what happened so we met up at the bank to get it straightened out. The bank lady (I have no clue what her official title was) was going through a list of charges-things like the post office and grocery store, then she says, "I see $1200 at Overstock.com." WHAT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Somehow, someone got a hold of my debit card number (I have the only card in exsistence for that account) and decided to treat themselves. Obviously by our reactions she could tell that the purchase was fraudulent. So she gave us the number for Overstock.com and Jason went home to give them a call. Then she canceled my debit card to prevent more purchases. She also told me that even though I didn't make the purchase, my account was still in the negative so I should get some money in there. I deposited the check I wrote to myself and headed home.

Talking to Overstock.com proved to be pretty painless. As it turns out, the purchase happened last night at 9:26pm. Within a few hours of purchase, Overstock flagged it as fraudulent. They noticed something was up because they couldn't verify the billing address and the shipping address was for overseas. The transaction was canceled. So they said they would refund the money to the bank (not the card because it was canceled) and it should be there in 2-5 days. Unfortunately, stuff like this happens all the time so they know what to look for. Kinda like a curse and a blessing all at the same time. So I'll check back on Monday about the status of my account.

Oh yeah...The thing that was bought? A 42"flat screen tv. Hope it was worth it!

Oh my gosh, that is awful! I mean, I know that kind of thing happens all the time, but give me a break--it's supposed to happen to "other people." I'm so glad they were able to resolve it so easily, what a nightmare.

Wow, I clicked over here as soon as I saw your myspace update. I was seriously hoping you were speaking metaphorically. Listen, my friend at Ft. Bragg had someone actually break into her house, so keep those doors locked! I am glad everything worked out ok in the end. Scary.

Geez Louise! That is AWFUL.

I never use a debit card on line, but even so, it just goes to show how easy it is for someone to access your info, no matter HOW careful you are. I'm glad it was fairly painless, and also that you caught it as quickly as you did!
